Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS): New Deadline

The rollout of Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement (MHHS) has been delayed until October 2025, giving businesses additional time to prepare for the significant change. MHHS is set to modernise how energy is managed and billed, using detailed data from smart meters to promote more efficient energy use and flexibility in the market.

The revised timeline provides businesses with an opportunity to review their energy strategies and ensure they’re ready to meet the requirements of this upcoming shift.

What Is MHHS?

MHHS is a program led by Ofgem to transition the UK energy market to a system where electricity usage is measured and billed in 30-minute intervals. Currently, energy bills are based on longer measurement periods, which don’t account for how and when energy is used.

With MHHS, smart meters will play a central role, offering more accurate insights into energy consumption. This will allow users to adjust their energy usage to off-peak times, helping to ease grid demand, reduce costs, and support the broader adoption of renewable energy sources.

Why Has The MHHS Deadline Been Delayed?

The new October 2025 deadline reflects changes to the program’s timeline, largely driven by the complexities of implementing a market-wide transformation. Industry feedback highlighted challenges with meeting the original schedule, including technical, operational, and resource constraints.

Ofgem has adjusted key milestones to ensure that stakeholders, including energy suppliers and businesses, have sufficient time to prepare for the changes. While this delay means a longer wait for MHHS, it also provides a better chance for a smooth rollout.

How Does The MHHS Delay Affect Businesses?

Although the timeline has shifted, MHHS remains a critical development for the energy market. Businesses should use this extra time to prepare effectively and explore ways to benefit from the new system:

  • Time to Plan:

The delay allows businesses to evaluate their current energy strategies and ensure they align with MHHS requirements.

  • Technology Improvements:

Investing in smart meters, energy monitoring tools, and IoT technologies can provide real-time insights and improve overall energy management.

  • Cost and Sustainability Benefits:

Once implemented, MHHS will make it easier to optimise energy usage by shifting to cheaper, off-peak periods. This also helps reduce environmental impact, supporting sustainability efforts.

What’s Next?

While the extended timeline gives businesses more time to prepare, it’s still important to take action early. A proactive approach will ensure compliance and help organisations maximise the benefits of MHHS when it launches.
